Most people are surprised at how well PS elements works. Aperture runs slower, to me, than Lightroom, but I still seem to end up in Photoshop anyway, so what's the point? For me, it's the organization the programs give you. Thanks to built-in GPS and ironically Google maps, iPhoto translates the latitude and longitude into recognisable places. But I find printing in Lightroom much better than Aperture. The thing with Gimp is that although it's a pretty good program, its just that, a pretty good program and you have to have X windows installed to make it run.
